ABOUT US

Welcome to Midlands Boat Surveys, led by a former Class 1 Deck certificated deep sea British Master Mariner based in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire. With over 13 years of seagoing experience on cargo freighters, bulk carriers, timber vessels, container ships, and offshore supply vessels, I bring a wealth of real-world maritime knowledge to every survey I carry out.

Following my deep-sea career, I completed the Diploma in Practical Yacht & Small Craft Surveying (Ipswich, 2017), adding formal technical qualifications to my hands-on expertise. I am a proud member of the IIMS and BMSE professional bodies.

My work covers a wide range of survey types for various vessels—from narrowboats to motor cruisers and yachts. Clients trust me not only for the thoroughness of my inspections, but also for the honest, safety-first advice I provide throughout the process.

Based in the East Midlands, I regularly travel to marinas across Lincoln, Newark, Farndon, Ipswich, Goole, Hull, Lichfield, York, the Thames, Severn and Avon rivers, and beyond. Many clients return for surveys on second or third boats, a testament to the quality of service I aim to provide every time.

When required, I collaborate with trusted Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) survey professionals including Jimmy Blockley, John Stone, Hannah Cope, and Mike Shaw—ensuring full coverage for any timeline, location, or vessel type.

TESTIMONIALS

See what boat owners, buyers, and marine professionals are saying about their experience with Midlands Boat Surveys.

"Many thanks for going back to retest the performance of our Nimbus 320; very much appreciated. We are now able to go ahead with the purchase with peace of mind. We are on schedule to have her lifted on Thursday and transported to Hythe for putting on her new berth by Friday. We can't thank you enough for all your help throughout this process. It has been a pleasure to have you on board, we really appreciate everything you have done for us."

"Having spoken to other boating buddies, I realised that having a pre-purchase survey was going to be a valuable course of action. Might even save some money! Found Tom after a Google search and absolutely no regrets. He is very thorough and the report he provided was really comprehensive so I knew there would be no nasty surprises in the short term. yes I did save some money! In fact I managed to renegotiate the selling price with the vendor as a result of some issues Tom found. I effectively recovered Tom's fee. Winner!"
