BSS Checklist

Boat Safety Certificate (BSS) – Owner Checklist

Keeping your boat safe and legally compliant starts with proper maintenance and preparation. Following this checklist will help ensure a first-time pass during your Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) examination.

Before the BSS Examiner Arrives

A few key preparations can save you time and prevent delays:

Are all installations and components compliant with BSS standards?

Do you have documentary evidence (e.g. ISO 7840 engine hose standards) ready for inspection?

Is your boat accessible and all systems operational for testing?

Midlands Boat Surveys

Important: A BSS certificate cannot be issued if the examination is incomplete.

Functional Checks

Please make sure the following systems are operational and ready to test:

Fuel-burning appliances are present and in working condition

Fuel (gas/oil) is available for testing

Batteries are charged if power is needed for appliances

Water systems are filled if boilers/heaters need testing
